At Ctomi, our research and development team scout the globe for active ingredients that are backed by clinical results. We've recently had a lot of people asking us about Minoxidil and the use of Minoxidil in our THRIVE 和 PROSPER products, so we've compiled answers to the most common questions we receive to help you understand Minoxidil and the role it plays in hair growth.
What is Minoxidil?
Minoxidil is a hair loss treatment suitable for both men and women (in different strengths) and can be taken as a tablet, or applied as a topical solution or foam. Minoxidil was originally developed in the 1970's as a treatment for high blood pressure, however scientists noticed that a side effect of the treatment was hair growth. The formulation was re-jigged and a topical solution for hair growth was then developed. Minoxidil has full Medsafe (NZ), TGA (Aus) and FDA (US) approval and can be purchased over the counter under a variety of brand-names.
How does it work?
Hair goes through its own growth cycle where the follicle produces new hair (growth), prepares for hair loss (intermediate) and then loses hair (shedding). The growth cycle occurs over a period of 3-5 years, while the intermediate and shedding stages often occur simultaneously over a period of 3-4 months. Hair follicles can often be in different states depending on which part of the scalp they are on.
Minoxidil works by facilitating ion transmission through potassium channels on the scalp. This transmission widens blood vessels, allowing more oxygen, blood and nutrients to be delivered to the individual hair follicles. These nutrients stimulate dormant hair follicles, leading to new hair growth while functioning hair follicles tend to grow thicker hair strands than before.
Note: Minoxidil can cause hair shedding in some users over the first couple of months as fold hairs are shed in preparation for stronger hair strands to grow.
How long does Minoxidil take to work?
Minoxidil needs to be applied topically to affected areas on the scalp every day for a minimum of 3 months to start seeing results. It's important to note that Minoxidil must be used continually for hair to keep growing. If you stop taking Minoxidil, any new hair growth will be eliminated within 4-6 months.
Are there clinical studies that prove the effects of Minoxidil?
During the research and development phase of our hair care products, we were particularly impressed by the following two studies on the effectiveness of Minoxidil:
1: One-year observational study
2: Four-month surveillance study
Are there any side-effects?
Minoxidil is very well tolerated by over 98% of people, however, those with diseases of the scalp or heart problems should consult their health practitioner before using.
Can women take Minoxidil?
Women can take Minoxidil, however results tend to differ in comparison to men. Minoxidil tends to stimulate more hair growth in men, however Minoxidil has proven to be effective in stopping hair loss in women who suffer from female pattern baldness. We recommend that women take a Minoxidil 2% solution as opposed to the 5% solution.
